    North Western Province Canal Project.

NWPC was a project catering the diversion of Mahaweli water to northern parts of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. The primary objective of the project was to feed the upper Mee- Oya catchment and Hakwatuna-Oya by conveying 130 million cubic meters (MCM) of water annually and subsequently, to provide sufficient water for the targeted irrigable area in the province. NWPC feeds eight major tanks and nearly 300 minor tanks in the province. MWSIP estimated the cost of the Project at LKR 16000 million. The project was implemented during 2016-2014. The office of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) is situated in Kurunegala.

NWPCP constructed 96 km of new and upgraded canals (including a 940 m tunnel) and two new earth gravity dams impounding the Mahakithula and Mahakirula Reservoirs. NWPC also transferred water from the Dambulu Oya River and the existing Nalanda and Wemedilla Reservoirs to command existing irrigation and water supply reservoirs.

    Project Benefits

Augmentation of the existing cascade (including more than 300 minor tanks and 8 major tanks) by transferring Mahaweli water to the northwest.

Irrigation of more than 12,000 hectares of land for agriculture in both Yala and Maha seasons.

Facilitation of access by the local people to safe drinking water that can minimize the occurrence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

There will be a positive impact on the environment and for people in the area due to recharge of the groundwater table following water transfer through the newly constructed canal system

Employment opportunities during the project implementation period will be created for people in the surrounding areas.
