Maduru Oya development project is the first major project taken up for construction under the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Programme (AMDP). Maduru Oya, lies between Mahaweli River and Mudeni Aru, with a total length of 135 km and a catchment area of 453 km². The command area of the Maduru Oya development project, with a gross area of 135,000 ha that includes a net irrigable area of 37,500 ha (22,000 ha in the left bank and 15, 500 ha in the right bank), lies along the right side of the Maduru Oya and is bounded in the East by Kiran lagoon, on the South East by Miyangolla Ela and on the North and West by Maduru Oya.
